As of September 23, 2002, the Toronto land registry office began offering voluntary electronic registration of land-related documents. Toronto is the largest jurisdiction in Ontario so far to offer this service. The following 11 jurisdictions also provide electronic registration: Middlesex (London), Halton (Milton), Wentworth (Hamilton), Peel (Brampton), Dufferin (Orangeville), York (Newmarket), Durham (Whitby), Ottawa-Carleton (Ottawa), Simcoe (Barrie), Wellington (Guelph) and Brant (Brantford).
Electronic registration allows clients to access the land registry system without having to attend physically at a provincial land registry office. The result is quicker and improved service for clients, where purchasers can get their keys sooner and sellers can get their sale proceeds earlier on the day of closing of their electronic transactions.
