Ontario New Home Warranty Program (ONHWP)
Registration Required
ONHWP provides certain protections and warranties. It is vital for you to ensure that the builder is registered and that your home is enrolled in the Program. Ask the Builder for his Builder's Number and the "enrolment number" of the house, if these numbers are not contained in the ONHWP Addendum to the agreement. Ensure the builder has attached the ONHWP Addendum to the agreement and that it has been properly filled in.
Warranties
The Program protects your deposit up to $40,000.00 for an enrolled home. If you give a higher deposit than $40,000.00, the excess deposit will be at a risk of loss if the builder does not complete the transaction and becomes insolvent or bankrupt. The Program also provides you with warranty protection for workmanship (e.g. one year protection against defects and code violations; two year protection against electrical defects and water seepage, and seven year protection against major structural defects). It is your responsibility to notify the builder and ONHWP about defects in writing.
